Customer Reviews

Dell Mini 12 defies "netbook" classification and emerges as a star5
PROS: big, vivid screen; nearly full-sized keyboard AND trackpad; very slim and light despite the 12.1" screen; works great with XP

CONS: glossy case is print-prone; some shrunken buttons on keyboard; 3-cell battery life is low, need the 6-cell; RAM not upgradeable
----------------

Are you looking for a light, slim laptop that mimics the Macbook Air at a fraction of the price? Then the Dell Mini 12 would be a great choice for you!

I wanted the readable/usable screen size of 12.1 (10 might be the sweet spot for some people, but not for me -- see for yourself firsthand) with a good keyboard, large trackpad, and light weight. Another important consideration was battery life of at least 5+ hrs (more on that later).

The Dell Mini 12 hits all of those points. The 12.1" screen causes some debate about its classification as a "netbook," but its Atom processor and low price definitely puts it in netbook territory. The screen is lovely, with true colors, no blotches or dead pixels, and decent viewing angles. The Atom processor (mine is 1.6 GHZ) is more than capable for basic web surfing, light typing, and reading PDFs in a Windows XP environment. And the price (I got it for under $400 at the brand name's Outlet store) is superb, if you shop around.

The one featured on Amazon is decent, though it has the slightly slower chip; however, most online reviews downplay the effect of this clock speed decrease. Realize that it has 1GB of RAM, which is suitable for basic netbook applications on XP. But no expandability exists with this current setup -- that may be a downer for those looking to soup up their netbook into performance ranges of a normal laptop or desktop.

Another knock against the Amazon one -- it comes with only the 3-cell battery. That's good for 2-3 hrs with some serious power conservation (Bluetooth off, screen brightness at maximum low), but the 6-cell gives you 5-6hrs easy. It adds a little bulk to the rear end, but this baby's back is still appealing and makes it easier to hold, if you know what I mean...

Another unexpected but appealing feature to the Dell Mini 12: it is completely fanless. Somehow it manages to stay cool to the touch! Over time, I have found the silence and relative coolness to be big pluses.

In the end, the key thing for me is usability. I found the 12.1" screen to be kind to my eyes and the trackpad/keyboard combo to be virtually normal-sized. The engineers at Dell were still able to package the Mini 12 into a ridiculously slim, light case. The closest competitor here would be the Samsung NC20, which is chunkier, louder, warmer, and more expensive, albeit with a much bigger hard drive and RAM expandability. For my purposes, the Dell Mini 12 is perfect. It just might be the same for you.

A good netbook appliance4
I purchased my cherry red Dell mini 12 a few weeks back directly from Dell. (it was a "scratch and dent" model) I was looking for a inexpensive, small, light and quiet laptop to surf the web/ watch some online videos and on occasion travel with. I also wanted to try out the Linux OS. The Dell Mini 12 fit those requirements. It is easy to set up and I have had no issues with the Linux OS or the software that came with it. There was a sizable amount of "upgrades" that I downloaded (over 250mb!) when I first connected online, but if you have a broadband connection it's no big deal. I've watched videos on Hulu and Youtube and they work fine. I've opened MS office files with the open office package and that works good too. The big plus here is the 12" screen with the 1280 X 800 resolution. You can see an entire web page with that resolution without scrolling (something you can't have with the smaller 9" and 10" models). I also have the 6 cell battery which I can use for 4-5 hours on a charge. However, it does add some extra depth to the unit which is important when buying a slip cover or bag. I purchased a Mini 12 sleeve for my dell mini and it is a tight fit with the 6 cell battery.
Now there are some issues you should be aware of before you purchase the Dell Mini 12. First off if your into the Linux stuff this unit has "custom" hardware and "closed" software that only work with the dell mini 12 version of Umbuntu so if your thinking "I'll just upgrade to the latest greatest" you will be sorely disappointed (check out conical's support pages). If Dell/Intel/conical plan on updating these custom closed drivers so you can upgrade to Umbuntu 9.04 they have not made any official announcement to that effect that I can find. You also should not expect Dell to give you much help with the Linux OS. They will send you to online web support sites. This unit has no fan so in order for it not to get overheated you have things like a slow hardrive and no memory expansion. The speaker output is really poor so plan on using it with head phones. The keyboard not being full size takes a litle getting used to and If I was a fast touch typist a big issue, but I'm not so it works for me. In short, what you have with the Mini 12 is an appliance like your stove or fridge. Buy it, turn it on, configure the settings, it works (hopefully!) but don't go looking to MacGyver this thing into your next video editor! Just plan on buying the next model when it comes out in a year of so.

Dell Mini 12 is the Best Netbook as of this writing.5
I spent about 35 hours a week trying to find the right Netbook. It is SO hard, since there are so many and they are so very similar. I did try an HP Netbook, which had a good keyboard and good speakers, but the screen was just too small.

After talking to the guys at a Laptop Repair Carlsbad they told me about the Dell Mini 12, and they said that I can get it for less than Dell sells it for, if I buy it from Amazon.com

The Mini 12 came in the mail a few days later, and I was very happy with it, once I disabled most of the startup items using msconfig

It was easy to connect to my wireless network, and I love the large screen. The speakers are the only low point for this device, so I usually in some external speakers. This Netbook is VERY Lightweight, runs most applications fast, and runs cool and very quite, with is no fan. It does have video output, but does not run every resolution, just a few of the more common ones.

Highs
- Very Light
- Large LCD for a Netbook
- Runs cool and quite
- Fast Enough for me

Lows
- Speakers are not LOUD

The Verdict
- Why live with a smaller screen if you don't have to?

Mark

SPECIAL NOTE ON THE ADDITIONAL DELL MINI 12s THAT I BOUGHT AFTER THE FIRST ONE ... SOME OF THESE ARE FACTORY REFURBS BEING SOLD AS NEW. THEY HAVE SCRATCHES ON THE BOTTOM. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS THE FAULT OF DELL OR AMAZON, BUT IT IS A BIT TACKY.

Customer Reviews

Not perfect, but a very good start.4
So far I'm very impressed with this system. The keyboard is just awesome for a netbook, and with Windows XP Home, it's really not all that slow. I've had several heavier applications open at the same time and didn't really have any problems. Aptana Studio (My web development IDE of choice), FireFox 3, TrueCrypt, XAMPP (Apache & MYSql) just to name a few. I've only got a few real complaints about this computer. One, the touchpad is horrible. It really shouldn't have had the two buttons integrated into the bottom of it, it's not possible to have your index finger navigating and thumb clicking at the same time. It's quite annoying (I bought a cheap travel mouse). The other complaint I have is the video playback quality. It's really just not that good. It's actually quite choppy for the most part if you try watching videos in fullscreen. I have however found a workaround for this, and it makes the video quality look awesome (see notes at the bottom).

Pros:
Awesome 10" display
Great almost full-size keyboard
3 USB ports (one of the left, two on the right)
2.6lbs, it's super light
Decent speed for a 1.3Ghz system.

Cons:
Cruddy video playback (mostly full screen problems)
Horrible Linux video driver support (Intel GMA 500, google it)
Battery life is a little bit lacking compared to other netbooks.
Touchpad needs to be redesigned.

Video Playback Notes/Quality tweak:
As far as the cruddy video playback is concerned, the one thing that I have found to help with this is the usage of a third party media player. A friend of mine turned me on to a player called KMPlayer [...] which comes bundled with just about every video codec ever made, and not to mention that it's portable (it runs off of a thumb drive). Anyway, you can customize the video rendering to allow for a much smoother playback of videos even on this slower model. Here's what I do:

Right-Click in the main KMPlayer window
Click on "Video (Advanced)"
Click "Video Renderer" up near the top.
Down near the bottom select "Enhanced Video Renderer".
Be amazed at how much better your videos look.

The playback quality that I received from doing this rivaled my full-size desktop with a real graphics card in it. This is definitely the most redeeming quality about this netbook because it really unlocks the ability for this to be a good portable media player. Cheers.

Truly Quiet PC5
I got this laptop about 2 days ago and am typing this review using it. The keyboard is great. About half of all netbooks have good keyboards like this one.

The best feature is that this Netbook is completely silent. There is NO fan which means there is no noise. This was the key feature for me because I like recording audio books so using this means I have a 100% silent environment to record my voice.

People complaint about the 1GB or ram but for windows XP that is all you really need. I think they can't add more ram to this netbook because it is passively cooled which means you can just slap in any module with your greasy fingers. I could be wrong. Anyways I would rather have 1GB with xp that runs everything then 2GB with Windows 7.

Another great feature that I only just noticed yesterday is that it has a sealed LCD. All other netbooks and laptops that I have seen have a normal lcd that is very difficult to clean. You know the type. If you touch it it ripples sort of so you become paranoid about cleaning them. This netbook has a solid plastic covering over the screen which means it is easy to clean.

Another important feature for me was that this included the windows XP reinstall CD. That means I can experiment with Android or Ubuntu and then put XP on later if I like. With other companies they don't include an OS cd so if you install another operating system on your computer and don't like it you are in trouble. Also the dell has no bloatware. I looked at the Acer 11.6 and it is full of about 100 useless bonus programs that slow it down. Enjoy doing that with no CD to fresh install.

So if you want a silent pc with an easy to clean screen get this one. Otherwise go with the Asus that has like 8 hour batter life. This one only have about 4 hours on a 3 cell battery.

love it!!!5
absolutely exceeded all my expectations!!! Not only is the keyboard the perfect size, the Dell Chat feature is so much fun. I didn't even know it came with it, but it is free internet chat with anyone with a webcam and now when I travel I can talk and see my kids. Mine came with the 3 cell battery, but with the energy effecient Atom z520 proceesor I get plenty of battery life, almost 4 hours of continous use, probably closer to 6 if taking breaks or letting it go idle. Very slim and light weight and with the wide screen I don't have to scroll left to right to see everything on the page. It also comes standard with XP, which is awesome and easy to use. Oh, and the Dell Remote Access is so cool, I can access all my files, music and pictures from my home PC and not clog up my hard drive. I liked mine so much, i bought one each for my kids, so we can always stay in touch.

Cute Little Gadget With Some Limitations4
Aside from having some buyer's regret because the price of this item has dropped about $100 since I bought it eight months ago, I have to concede that I like this netbook a lot. I have two full size pc's (a Mac Airbook and a Sony Vaio), but bought this because I needed something small and convenient to take with me on the road as I am not totally enchanted with my Iphone. For the most part, I use this to respond to emails, surf the net, store photos, and access files. It fits into my purse, weighs maybe 2 lbs, boots up quickly, and the 6v battery give me a lot of time (approx. 7-8 hours)on one charge. It even has a camera, but other than initially testing it out I don't use it. The keyboard is scaled down, but easy to use and easy to get used to. I can't comment on Dell phone support because any questions I've had have been answered via the online tutorial.
While this clearly doesn't do everything that a full feature laptop does(no built in cd/rom for starters), I need a pretty basic machine on my travels and am not fussy. I doubt if this would be adequate to support some business applications, but for the casual pc user who doesn't want to lug around a clumsy and/or heavy pc this is a pretty cool substitute.
I have accessorized this with a keyboard cover which does a great job keeping debris where it belongs, a netbook sleeve, and a chill pad.
The netbook is a good substitute for a pc when you don't require a workhorse.

Love it!5
Great little machine for traveling, surfing the internet on the couch and skyping.

The good:
The quality of the keyboard is very good.
The screen quality is better than I expected.
Surprisingly zippy performance. Starting up, especially.

The bad:
The trackpad is too small up and down.It is not very accurate and takes time to get used to.
The battery fits a bit loosely and rattles slightly.
The viewing angle of the screen could be better.

BE AWARE. THE BATTERY THAT COMES WITH THIS IS NOT PICTURED. The battery is double the capacity which is good, but does not sit flush with the bottom of the machine and effectively doubles the thickness of the computer. See the photo here: [...]

The negatives are just to let you know the shortcomings. For a netbook at this price, they are minor at worst. Definitely a great buy.

Just received this computer4
Very nice computer but I want to share a couple of specifics that others have questioned.
1. This comes with a 6 cell battery so it sticks out on the bottom in back. Very good battery life- about 7 hours yesterday.
2. Windows 7 is the 64-bit version.
3. There is 4 GB Ram.
Much faster than my Dell mini 9 and only slightly larger. So far, I love it.

Great CPU for the price5
I want to add one thing that is perhaps easy to overlook with this laptop: it has the best CPU in it's class and price range. Most notebooks with an 11.6 inch screen have a Celeron CPU (such as the new Acer 1410 series). This means less cache and no "Intel Speedstep" which is an important power saving feature (used when in battery mode). Celeron laptops will drain your battery quickly when you use any compute heavy task. The other common CPU is a single core "Core Solo". The single core CPUs have the bad habit of slowing to a crawl whenever the anti-virus kicks in (because it can't offload that task to the second core) and being generally slow if you run any internet security software(which any sane person would today but adds a lot of background CPU tasks that can run on a second core if you have one). You can step up to a full Core2 Duo, but that can add 20%-30% onto the cost (see the Acer Timeline series).

Dell did the right thing here when they used the 1.3GHz Intel Pentium SU4100 Processor. It has two cores, 2MB cache (twice the Celeron but 2/3 the more expensive Core2 Duo), and a 800MHz memory bus (vs. the Celeron's 667Mhz). And it has the all important SpeedStep technology found in the more expensive Core2 Duo. The only major feature it lacks is Virtualization, which is mostly a server technology which no home application to speak of. It uses the same core as the more expensive Core2 Duo so aside from the smaller cache the basic performance is the same (though some Core2 Duos have faster memory bus). It's the best fit price/performance wise but lately it's been passed over for the cheaper Celeron but vendors who count on consumers not knowing any better.

Inspiron 11.6 inch laptop4
Powerful, feature rich, laptop small enough to fall into the netbook catagory. Streaming or stored video plays bautifully due to the dual core CPU, good video processor, and high definition screen. Keyboard is large enough to type on normally after some practice. Only faults are the lack of a VGA output, has only HDMI, and the awful fingerprint gathering glossy black finish. Price on Amazon is the lowest I've found for comparable laptop. As always the packing and shipping were excellent.

Terrific Netbook5
Note: I use computers for my work but don't pay much attention to details about them. I'm sometimes willfully ignorant of the details of my work computers, so this review (for better or worse) will not be a super technical one focusing on specifications and related details. I wanted a simple computer to use outside of work, and that's what I got here. I received this Dell Netbook a few days ago and wanted to share my initial impressions of it.

I do a great deal of writing for my job and need to have frequent email access. I have a Dell Notebook but find that it's a bit of a hassle hauling it around anywhere, so it ends up staying at home most of the time. When I saw this Dell's Netbook on sale, I thought it might be ideal for my needs. In particular, I wanted something very lightweight that would allow me to access the web, answer email, access PDF documents, and edit documents. This Dell does all that and much more.

My job buys all my computers (the last computer I purchased myself was a Commodore 64 when I was a kid!), so I was a bit nervous purchasing it. I checked out reviews here and elsewhere and they seemed to indicate that the Dell Netbook would work well for my needs. However, I was concerned by some accounts of netbooks being slower than laptops and having many of other deficits. Fortunately, my concerns were unfounded (it isn`t slow and I have low needs for extensive computer memory anyway). I've never had to unpack a computer before (the IT people at my job have that honor), but it couldn't have been easier. I was literally using my new Netbook within minutes. Everything was preloaded and ready for use.

I was hoping that it would come with Microsoft Word, but it instead includes Microsoft Works Word Processor, which I`d never used before. When I tried to open a Word document from my email, I was prompted to download Word Viewer. The two programs are compatible, but it is a bit of a hassle converting documents back and forth. Otherwise, I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. The Netbook is not slow in accessing the net even with numerous programs open at the same time. It is super lightweight -- not much bigger or heavier than a large hardback book. The battery in the back does stick out a bit, although that actually helps make it more stable on a flat surface. Even straight out of the box, the battery lasted well over 5 hours. Other features include a webcam, adobe, media player, explorer -- all the standard items you'd expect. As I mentioned, I don't pay much attention to computer specifications and whether it has this feature or not. I simply don't use my computers for anything too complicated. However, for what I need, this Dell Netbook more than exceeds my expectations. The Netbook's portability make it ideal for carrying it around and travel. I think it would also be a great starter computer for kids and teens.

My Dell Mini 10 (Model 1010) arrived today and I love it already. When I took the Mini 10 out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the bulge under the bottom rear of the unit (the six (6) cell battery). I spotted a funny object in the box that turned out to be a tiny little antenna. This confirmed the HDTV Tuner inside. I turned Mini 10 on and went through the brief setup. The keyboard feels good. Fascinated by the built-in HDTV, I affixed the tiny antenna next to the camera with the supplied mount, turned it on and waited while it scanned the available digital channels. It found all the local channels. The reception is great. I forgot about my new computer and admired the great TV reception for the next three hours.

After playing with the touch pad for a few minutes, I realized that a brief tap served as the mouse double-click (nice). HDMI, HDTV Tuner, Windows 7, 6-cell battery. This is a great little computer and a great deal.
Same configuration sells for $514.00 on the manufacturer's website[...] . At $399, you save $115 ($514 - $399 = $115)

I plan to uninstall the free MacAfee antivirus trial and replace it with the excellent free AVG Free Edition Antivirus ([..]). The included Microsoft Works word processor program is better than my old version of Microsoft Word 2000. More than adequate for my needs. Windows 7 Starter is lite, fast and great for my needs. Great Cyber Monday deal. Thanks Amazon for putting together a great unit for a great price!
